Papa’s potato knowledge sees Cleethorpes restaurant scoop prize at National Fish and Chip Awards

A Cleethorpes fish and chip restaurant has battered all the opposition to scoop a top national accolade.

Papa’s Fish and Chips was among the winners at the 2019 National Fish & Chip Awards, held today in London. The restaurant and takeaway, based on Cleethorpes Pier, won the From Field to Frier award, which acknowledges fish and chip businesses that excel in potato knowledge including responsible sourcing and ability to produce the finest quality chips.

Papa’s owners were at the glittering ceremony at The Royal Lancaster Hotel to collect the prize, which gave it the title of producing the best chips in the country.

The family opened up in Cleethorpes nearly two years ago following a £250,000 investment and around 130 people work at the pier, serving thousands of visitors throughout the year.

Papa’s was assessed for the award against a wide variety of judging criteria, with a specific focus on its policies and procedures in the responsible sourcing of potatoes.

Judges were also impressed with staff’s potato knowledge, including types, seasonality, storage and preparation of raw ingredients.Industry judges undertook in-depth inspection visits to review the front and back-of-house practices and operations within the premises.

Marcus Coleman, chief executive of awards organisers Seafish, said: “The National Fish and Chip Awards take great pride in celebrating and rewarding every aspect of running a successful fish and chip business, including one of the most essential components – the humble chip.

“With fish sustainability currently high on the agenda within industry and government, it’s easy to overlook the significance of potato provenance.

“Often overlooked, delicious fluffy chips play an important role in producing the perfect portion of fish and chips – and it all starts with sourcing the right potato.

“This award not only measures the quality of the chip, it also recognises each business’ efforts to source responsibly, providing customers with traceable and sustainable products. I’m pleased to say that Papa’s excelled in all areas.”

Sponsor Oliver Boutwood, director at Isle of Ely said: “As a sponsor of this awards programme, I am heartened to observe so many forward-thinking fish and chip businesses placing rightful importance on the responsible sourcing of their potatoes.

“Shops are also relaying stories behind the potato supply process to their customers, with many owners able to inform diners the exact field the potatoes they are eating were grown in. Congratulations to Papa’s!”
